On Tuesday, Marin Cilic and Philipp Kohlschreiber stepped away from the green grass courts of Stuttgart in order to acquaint themselves with a pair of green automobiles from Mercedes-Benz.

Both players know a thing or two about using touch and conserving energy on the court, but it was their first time taking the wheels of a hybrid vehicle.

In this driving experience, Cilic and Kohlschreiber each took command of a brand-new Mercedes-Benz C 350e plug-in hybrid and drove a fixed route of about 20 minutes as economically as possible. The circuit took the players through different traffic situations and road conditions in the Stuttgart area.

“It’s my first experience with something like this. For city driving, or any other kind of driving, it has only positives,” said Cilic. “Most of the driving we do today is in the cities, where speeds are low. So the hybrid technology is a big step in the right direction, to get people to be more green and use less fuel.”

The World No. 9 Cilic enjoyed seeing his progress on the dashboard’s ECO display, which tells the driver in real-time how energy-efficient his or her driving style is.

Kohlschreiber, no stranger to high-tech German engineering, also enjoyed the experience, which he found quite challenging.

“It’s difficult (to be as economical as possible). You have to be very gentle with your feet and not accelerate or brake too hard,” revealed Kohlschreiber. “You also have to look further up the road to be smoother and drive in a more controlled way.”

“I think it’s the right step for the future. Mercedes did a very good job,” he said. “Of course, hybrid technology is new, but so far it is very impressive.”

Throughout the day, both players managed to adjust their driving styles to be more energy-efficient. However, it was Kohlschreiber, the local favourite, who came away the winner by the slightest of margins.
