Playing in his first grass-court match of the year with doubles partner Feliciano Lopez, Rafael Nadal overcame an early challenge from Rameez Junaid and Adil Shamasdin to move into the quarter-finals of the MercedesCup.

A desire to get more match practice under his belt before Wimbledon led Nadal to sign up for the doubles field in Stuttgart alongside compatriot Lopez.

The two Spanish lefties were challenged in the first set by Australian Junaid and Canada’s Shamasdin, but showed their class in the 7-6(5), 6-2 win, conceding no break points on their deliveries while creating ten on their return games.

They will face Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in the quarter-finals after the Colombians edged Lukas Rosol and Dominic Thiem 7-6(5), 7-6(5).

Fresh from a run to the Roland Garros quarter-finals, second seeds Marcin Matkowski and Nenad Zimonjic beat French duo Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-4 in 55 minutes in the first round. The Polish/Serbian duo saved all six break points they faced to book a quarter-final spot.

"The first match on grass is never easy, especially in doubles," said Zimonjic. "It's difficult to adjust. Nobody had much time on the grass before the match. I thought we played quite good for our first match together on grass. It's a good start and we're looking forward to the next match."
